Senior Design Engineer – Hydraulics

Location: Brimfield, IL
Pay Range: Starting at $50/hour (negotiable)

Position Overview 

We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer – Hydraulics to lead hydraulic system design initiatives for complex, heavy-duty vehicle platforms. This engineer will support new product development, system upgrades, and customer-driven engineering projects. The ideal candidate has deep hands-on experience with hydraulic systems in construction, mining, or off-highway equipment, along with strong design-to-manufacture knowledge. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead design and development of hydraulic systems for large industrial equipment 
  • Develop new products or expand existing product lines, preparing technical objectives and specifications 
  • Interpret direction from the Project Engineering Manager to determine optimal design approaches 
  • Create and modify hydraulic schematics for assigned projects 
  • Participate in component selection and ensure compliance with domestic and international standards 
  • Perform hydraulic calculations for sizing and performance requirements 
  • Prepare layouts and detailed designs for hydraulic assemblies and sub-assemblies 
  • Engage in design reviews and provide timely project updates 
  • Maintain thorough engineering documentation and project records 
  • Collaborate with Purchasing on specifications, quality, cost, and availability of hydraulic components 
  • Manage design costs and ensure manufacturability 
  • Provide accurate engineering information to internal business units 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of departmental standards and procedures 
  • Update and revise legacy designs to meet current guidelines and standards 
  • Support manufacturing during build phases and assist in troubleshooting hydraulic issues 
  • Provide engineering support to Product Support, Marketing, and customers; occasional travel may be required 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in construction, mining, or off-highway equipment design 
  • 2–3 years of hands-on experience selecting hydraulic system components 
  • Proficient in reading hydraulic schematics 
  • Vehicle design experience required 
  • Experience with design-to-manufacture principles 

Preferred Skills 

  • Experience with SolidEdge, Creo, Pro-E, or UG NX 
  • Hydraulic hose and tube routing experience 
  • Strong troubleshooting ability with heavy equipment hydraulic systems 
  • Familiarity with Infor XA 
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office 
  • Intermediate knowledge of UG NX and SolidEdge CAD tools

Position Overview 

We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to coordinate and execute simple to moderately complex design projects across multiple product lines. This engineer will contribute to new product development, product line enhancements, and customer-driven engineering requests. The position requires strong mechanical design fundamentals, vehicle design experience, and a design-to-manufacture mindset. 

Key Responsibilities 

Design & Development 

  • Interpret assignments from management or the Project Engineering Manager for new product development or product updates 
  • Prepare technical objectives, specifications, and initial design concepts 
  • Perform design studies to determine the most effective engineering approach 
  • Create basic layouts and designs before passing work to Designers and Detailers for completion 
  • Follow established engineering guidelines and standards 
  • Reuse existing components and assemblies where possible to reduce cost, risk, and development time 
  • Perform calculations to confirm design safety, reliability, and performance 
  • Select appropriate materials, heat treatments, and surface treatments for designed components 
  • Identify and select vendor components as required 
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation including calculations, vendor data, and evaluation reports 

Project Coordination & Reviews 

  • Keep management informed of project status and any challenges encountered 
  • Initiate and participate in design reviews, implementing changes as needed 
  • Support creation of engineering software documentation 

Manufacturing & Cross-Functional Support 

  • Provide support to Shop Supervisors when production issues arise 
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Engineering to ensure designs are cost-effective and manufacturable 
  • Check and review work produced by Designers and Detailers 
  • Coordinate with Purchasing on component specifications, quality expectations, cost, and availability 
  • Support Sales, Marketing, Product Support, and customer inquiries with engineering data 
  • Occasionally meet with vendors regarding components, pricing, and availability (some travel may be required) 

Leadership & Oversight 

  • Oversee Designers and Detailers to ensure project completion and design accuracy 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering 
  • 2–3 years of design experience in manufacturing, heavy equipment, or related industries 
  • Vehicle design experience required 
  • Knowledge of design-to-manufacture practices 
  • Intermediate proficiency in CAD systems 
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office 
  • Familiarity with Infor XA 
  • Working knowledge of dimensioning, tolerancing, and mechanical calculations

Position Overview 

We are seeking an Engineering Checker with experience reviewing mechanical designs, drawings, and 3D models for accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with engineering standards. This role is critical to maintaining high-quality design output and supporting cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing. 

The ideal candidate has experience in heavy equipment or a manufacturing environment, strong attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. 

Key Responsibilities 

Design & Drawing Review 

  • Review engineering drawings and 3D models for compliance with standard design, drafting, and manufacturing practices 
  • Validate designs for manufacturability and appropriate use of existing parts 
  • Review and verify Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), including drawing accuracy, change documentation, priorities, and disposition of parts or assemblies 

Cross-Functional Coordination 

  • Work with Industrial Engineering on design changes that improve manufacturability or fixture design 
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing and vendors regarding design clarifications, part issues, or required updates 
  • Provide recommendations for rework of parts that cannot be used as-is 
  • Consult with manufacturing teams on actions needed to address identified non-conformances 

Quality & Process Support 

  • Prioritize and manage drawing packages based on release timelines, ECN priority, and job impact 
  • Collaborate with engineers to correct drawings or recommend design improvements related to cost, materials, or manufacturability 
  • Participate in creation and maintenance of engineering drafting and design standards 
  • Assist with drafting and design tasks when workload allows 

Additional Duties 

  • Participate in design reviews as required 
  • Conduct failure analysis on returned components and provide recommendations for design improvements 
  • Review components of customer assemblies scheduled for rebuild to determine rework or replacement requirements 
  • Occasionally travel to meet with customers or suppliers 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field (preferred) 
  • 3+ years of experience in heavy equipment design or manufacturing engineering 
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software; Unigraphics/NX preferred 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy 
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
